Hi John,

I use REW a lot and to me it is the best and most comprehensive tool out there.

Would you consider adding a Clear All and Select All measurements in the Overlay and All SPL windows?

Thanks Ole

Hi John,

Any plans for creating polar plots, other directivity and power response charts from several REW measurements?

Thanks

Ole

It is on the todo list somewhere, but there are other packages that do that well.

John Mulcahy updated REW macOS DMG (includes private Java 8 JRE) with a new update entry:

REW V5.20 beta 44 macOS DMG

Changes in V5.20 beta 44:

Impedance measurement

  • The impedance calibration steps have been numbered to make clear they should be done in sequence (thanks go to Bernard for the suggestion). Repeating a step will also clear the calibration status for subsequent steps, as they should be redone to correctly calibrate the setup. Note that the reference resistor calibration can be repeated at any time without affecting the open or short circuit calibrations.
  • Impedance cal file...

John -

I'm seeing a bit of odd behavior in the RT60 Decay panel. I first noticed it in
beta 43 and it continues with the current beta. The 'Generate' button and the
settings window either do not display or they randomly blink on and off or they
partially display (see image1) or the pointer changes to the input cursor
as it passes over the invisible input fields of the invisible settings panel.

If I minimize the REW window while the RT60 Decay panel is displayed and then
restore it, everything but the graph axes disappear—all the toolbar buttons and
the measurements panels disappear (see image2). If I pass the mouse cursor
over the areas with the missing graphic elements—toolbar bottons and the
measurement panel—they partially redraw (see image3). If I select any of
the other panels and then minimize and restore the window, everything is redrawn
properly. This is only seen on the RT60 Decay panel. All other panels draw and
refresh properly.

The installations I am having this issue on are two Mac Minis. One, a Mac Mini
server with a Corei7 processor, 16 GB RAM, Intel 3000 Graphics with 512 MB
(Dynamic, Max) VRAM, running macOS 10.13.6. Two, a Mac Mini core i5, 16 GB RAM,
Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB (Dynamic, Max) VRAM, running macOS 10.13.6.

I have tested on a Core i3 iMac with 16GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB
(Dynamic, Max) VRAM, running macOS 10.13.6. Two Core i5 MacBook Pros with 16 GB
RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB (Dynamic, Max) VRAM, running macOS 10.14.6.
A Core i5 MacBook Air with 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB (Dynamic,
Max) VRAM, running macOS 10.14.6. None of these display the issue.

I'm also seeing an issue with the scrollbars in all windows where the scroll tab
will leave artifacts as the scroll tab is moved downward on vertical scrollbars
(see image4). Once the scroll tab is released, the artifacts disappear. There
was also another bit of screen corruption in the RT60 window (see image5) that
did not go away when minimizing and restoring the window. This only appeared
after clicking on the 'Calculate RT60 model' button of the settings panel in the
RT60 Decay window and then switching to the RT60 window. It only disappeared
after quitting and restarting. This was on a MacBook9,1 with an Intel Core m5
processor, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 515, 1536 MB (Dynamic, Max) VRAM with
a Retina display LCD.

I have run the uninstaller from the /Applications/REW and then reinstalled REW
and the behavior continues. I tried the '-Dsun.java2d.d3d=false' line in the
roomeqwizard.vmoptions file to no avail.

Can you attach the log files for the systems showing the problem, please? Not confident there will be anything there but worth checking.

D3D is only for Windows, you could try:

-Dsun.java2d.opengl=true

or

-Dapple.awt.graphics.useQuartz=false

in the vmoptions file to see if that makes any difference. Can also try changing the colour scheme to None in the RT60 Decay Appearance settings.

Nothing in the output log file or any of the wizard log files except versioning and start time/date info—no java errors.

None of those options had any effect on the behavior. I was able to change the color scheme by clicking where I thought the 'Colour scheme settings' button would appear in the invisible 'Controls' dialog. That didn't have any effect, either.

Tried the same suggestions on the MacBook with the scrollbar and RT60 window issue—didn't help, either.

The common thing with the two Mac Minis seems to be the Intel 3000 Graphics display GPU. Don't know if that's a clue.

I recall there were problems with the HD3000 on Windows a few years back, driver issues. On macOS the only way to update drivers is to update the OS as far as I know, but it might not help and you may not want to do that anyway. I don't think there is anything I can do to address this within the REW code.

John Mulcahy updated REW macOS DMG (includes private Java 8 JRE) with a new update entry:

REW V5.20 beta 46 macOS DMG

Changes in V5.20 beta 46:

  • Added a plot of Equivalent Peak Dissipation Resistance (EPDR) on the Impedance & Phase graph
  • Improved impedance measurement reliability for very low impedances when the noise filter is being used
  • Improved rejection of DC offsets in measurement data
  • Recognise "UMM_6" as well as "UMM-6" as being the UMM-6 mic
  • Added Alt+T as a shortcut to start/stop the RTA from the RTA window
  • When the RTA window is shown move focus to the on/off button so the...

REW V5.20 beta 47 macOS DMG

Changes in V5.20 beta 47:

  • Frequency (.txt, .frd, .csv) and impedance (.zma) response files can be dragged and dropped onto the main REW window for import
  • Added a "Show slice at cursor" option to the spectrogram controls to plot the level at the cursor Y position below the spectrogram

Bug fixes:
  • Trace arithmetic operations on measurements without an impulse response could produce an exception
  • Incorrect frequencies in data exported at 48 PPO...

First of all, thanks John for your excellent work, a program that I use to test equipments of my friends.
I’ve a question about the newer stepped sine measurements features in the beta releases. I find very useful the Step level and frequencies measures. However, they are limited to sine functions, eventually with some harmonics, rights? Is there a way to add also not harmonics components? In this case the same functions can be used to have IMD like din, CCIF etc. graph for input level.

That's on the todo list to add at some point.

Behaves OK for me (beta 47 on 10.15.3). Perhaps some setting-related issue, are you able to capture a screenshot of the Room Sim window? Might help with working out what the cause is. You could try clearing REW's preferences using the option to "Delete preferences and shut down" in the Preferences menu.

I'm seeing high CPU usage and freeze during install on MacOS 10.15.4 and 5.20 beta 47. I can make it to the License Agreement before I get a loading spinner and the installer becomes unresponsive. Activity Monitor says the installer is not responding. I do not have Java SDK/JRE installed on my machine. Here is some info for the crash

Code:
Command: com.install4j.runtime.launcher.MacLauncher
Path: /private/var/folders/*/jre.bundle/Contents/Home/jre/bin/java
Event: hang
Hardware model: MacBookPro16,1 (2019 8 core i9 machine)

That used to happen with some interface managers like Magnet, Moom, QuicKeys and the like. A change in the installer classes after beta 26 should have dealt with that, but it could be the same underlying cause. If you have any of those assistive packages installed try disabling them while the installer runs.

Thank you, that worked. I was using Magnet. The installer ran perfectly. Cheers!

John Mulcahy updated REW macOS DMG (includes private Java 8 JRE) with a new update entry:

REW V5.20 beta 48 macOS DMG

Changes in V5.20 beta 48:
  • Full range pink periodic noise now has flat spectrum below 10 Hz, like the pink random noise. To cut off at 10 Hz use the Custom option.
  • Added more phase steps to allow -180..180 with a 50 dB SPL range
  • Refinements to EQ target match, including faster matching
  • Bug fix: The predicted response was not valid and showed -240 dB if the filter set contained a low pass filter
  • Bug fix: An exception could occur when plotting the impulse envelope
  • Bug...

My sincere apologies if this is an FAQ or covered in the documentation (which I _have_ read). When I bring up the measurement dialog on 5.20 beta 48 the 'Noise' method button is greyed out. Bug? Not implemented? Other?
