Remakes that Fare Better Than Expected

So in light of the movie originals that are Time Crushed, I thought it was time to have a thread dedicated to movie remakes that fared better than you expected.

With that said, let's start with mine.

Dredd - The original Stallone film did not do it for me. Even as a little kid I never thought it was that entertaining. I tried watching it a couple times and still didn't quite enjoy it. The remake however, highly entertaining and loved it!

I already alluded to this in another thread but I'll go with Tron Legacy. It's one of my favorite remakes not to mention an absolute powerhouse to show off the gear.

Tron Legacy was a good one! I loved watching it in the IMAX theater way back when. At home it definitely caters to the bass-heads with the soundtrack.

Rewatching the film in 3D on my LG adds even more to the aesthetics and style of the film, too!

I can see maybe Scarface (to some) because audio and video quality screams dated. 3:10 to Yuma I don't know about that one but True Grit is a true crime. No, no, no, and nope!

Completely missed the maybe because all I seen was True Grit glowing from the list. We need a panel to vote on titles that members call out due to gross negligence! Almost like Todd kicking off the thread with GASP…ET! I'm kidding of course but it's interesting what others find haven't stood the test of time.

I've only ever seen the remake (and liked it a lot... I want to say it was one of the first 7.1 encodes released on Blu-ray?)

I stand corrected! I was talking about the most recent with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. I guess there was another made back in 1957. I have never seen the original and therefore have no idea how it was. I'll assume Mark was talking about that one? My bad Mark…

Far as I know there are only two 3:10 to Yuma films. I do like the '07 film slightly more than the '57. The films are very similar and even much of the script is the same. Ford and Van Heflin were great but I prefer the grittier, faster paced '07 film. If you want to get into themes, meanings and complex issues of society, well I give the nod to '57.

How about Oceans Eleven??? The Rat Pack did pretty good in the original, but Soderbergh's remake LARGELY overshadowed the original!

I'd vote no. All of them pretty much tell a different story (except for Khan).

It's a tough call on movies like Star Trek. I mean, technically everyone refers to the JJ Abrams-helmed Star Trek movies as a "reboot"

I also think the same goes for The Dark Knight Trilogy. While telling completely different stories, they're more considered a reboot.

So I don't know...

Did anybody like the recent Spider-man remakes? In some ways I like the early 2000 versions but the new one is much darker and less of a love story.

For the most part I actually liked the Amazing Spider-Man movies. I thought the chemistry between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy was the best part. The villains on the other hand, I did not really care for. The Lizard, Electro, Green Goblin, and even The Rhino where not very formidable.

Good question... they haven't exactly taken the same storyline and remade a film, though. So probably not.

BUT... I know where you're going with this (I think)... and I'll have to agree the reboots were fantastic.

King Kong ... I think Skull Island will be the 3rd or 4th remake. Forget about the King Kong vs Godzilla movies... those don't count.

The last one in 2005 was superb... no doubt the best yet, but Skull Island looks like it will top it.
