Man dies after getting his head stuck in a movie theater seat

According to reports, the man dropped his phone in between two seats and bent down to pick it up, only for the electric seat’s footrest to clam down on his head. The man’s partner realized he was stuck under the footrest and called for help. Movie theater staff and other moviegoers tried to get his head out from under the footrest but they struggled to set him free immediately.

Wow, this is so sad and tragic.

Seems like a shockingly unusual tragedy. I would like to hear what an investigation finds into how he got his head stuck such that he was so injured. Why did he go into cardiac arrest? Was it that the stress or the event caused a heart attack and was otherwise unrelated, or did the chair somehow cause this?

My chairs have two safety mechanisms that make it difficult to hurt yourself with the motorized footrest. The first is a safety stop that doesn't allow the foot rest to close. The motor will stop and not restart if it senses resistance. The second is that it's all spring loaded so that there is a lot of flexibility when closing it.

I suspect the chairs that are used in the theater do not have those safety mechanisms in place..

Very sad indeed.
