Input on baseline REW measurement

Hi AV NIRVANA: I’m seeking input on a REW measurement.


My initial purpose for using the software was to check to see if there was a difference in output between my 2 channel speakers. The tweeter of one of the speakers has a separation of the fabric coating at the phase plug interface (ring radiator design). I wasn’t sure if this would affect the sound since it didn’t look right. Tweeter replacements are expensive. However, comparing the wave forms showed them to be remarkably similar. Question answered.


I then ran a combined measurement for both speakers with the microphone at the typical listening position (see attached). To my uneducated eye, it looks relatively flat. What is the view from the forum? Could I smooth out the frequency below 300 Hz with better speaker placement, although to my ear, the current placement sounds best? Are there any other options besides room baffles/ treatment which would NOT be an option in my house according to the interior designer (wife).


The speakers (Sonus Faber Cremona M Auditors) are 16” from the back wall, 89.5” center to center, and 115” to the listening position. The side walls are 54” away. They are ported in the back.

I would definitely say you could improve it, but it will take more than moving the speakers around, although I suspect they need to be moved for better imaging, sound stage and depth acuity.

You will get a better picture of your response at 1/12th smoothing...



There are some equalization options out there... first ones that come to mind are the miniDSP DDRC Dirac Live units. There are others too, but these are what I would go to first and foremost. Here are some of the manufacturers using Dirac Live to give you an idea of how high-end it is. These will also help you get a little more extension from your speakers.

If your speakers are backed up to the wall as close as 16"... in most cases this will adversely effect your imaging and depth acuity in a significant way. You sure have nice speakers to possibly be missing the most they can do. Look at the Cardas speaker setup guide for a good starting point... and adjust from there. You might find a happy medium between the Cardas recommended distance from the wall and you current placement. Either way, the further you can get them out from the wall, the better. Then measure with REW again, although I still think you will need something to correct your response, especially in that lower frequency range.
