I would be wary of this. How exactly do they 'add DV' to a display incapable of displaying it? Stick to HDR and be happy would be my recommendation. Especially with regards to a projector.

Some dogs won't hunt.

Maybe I need a brush up lesson on metadata cause I still don't see how a display that is capable of only HDR/HLG can take advantage of DV metadata.

Maybe I'll have to drop the hammer on one of these and test it out.

I think the trick here is in LLDV - i.e. player-led Dolby Vision. That means tonemapping will be carried out by player and HDMI will already carry tonemapped signal.

So what does it do? Convert it to something that the display supports? Is it that much different than HDR10?

I think I've found the answer to my above questions. I've gogt an email sent out to HD Fury inquiring about some further questions I have before I purchase one.

Can you share some of those questions?

I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how much of an improvement this could be if the display doesn't have the dynamic range to begin with for a good HDR experience. What are the minimum nits recommended?

Also it looks like you have to be very proficient with display calibration and have a meter and software to set it up properly? Would this be correct?

From what I gather it modifies the EDID. I had asked them which models actually do this enhanced DV stuff - the Diva, Maestro and Vertex2 all do this.

I think it’s a bit more involved than just plug and play. At least that’s what I gathered from the YouTube video. I’ve got a Diva on the way. Personally I’m not all that optimistic cause I’ve yet to see a magical box fix anything for less than like $800. Hopefully it’s not another Darbee.

Actually that $800 quote is old. That was for DVDO’s HD image processor from about 10+ years ago. The iScan Duo iirc. And Lumagens run around what? $5k for one that supports HDR?

You may want to ask the HDFury people your first questions.

As to the last questions, I believe you are correct. :T

Fast delivery! I think it took like 2 days total to get to me - I got it on Wednesday. Planning on opening the box today to mess around with it some.

So far I have been unable to get LLDV to work. All I can get is what I already have which is HDR10.

I messed with it for over an hour and a half on my tablet. Took me all of 2 minutes on my computer with google to realize that my Shield TV 4K is incapable of LLDV. I'll shuffle some boxes around and get an Apple TV down here tomorrow.

ATV does not support ATMOS from my Plex server though. That is why I have a Shield TV 4K in my theater. Utilizing what I have now, I see zero reason to have this thing. We'll see what happens when I bring the Apple TV downstairs later today.

One other thing I'd like to add is that their support is quick via Discord and email. The problem is that they direct you to the thread at AVS forum a lot of times. That should be a red flag.

Ok, in a nutshell, it does what they say it does. :T Overall it was a royal pain getting it working though. I would not recommend the Diva for anyone looking for this function though. I'd recommend the Vertex or the Maestro as they are a cheaper option. I bought the Diva because I intend to upgrade my ambient lighting behind my screen. So I'll be testing that out when they come out with the longer versions - supposed to be a few weeks.

I'll be doing some more tinkering with this in the coming weeks when I get my meters setup and readings taken. But for now the generic settings work. For those wondering how to setup the generic LLDV, I'll work on putting it up here in the coming days.
