Hi Everyone!
Signing up early-on affords me the benefit of recognizing almost everyone here that used to be on that other forum. Those people's high standards and ability to create engaging, quality content are the major reasons I joined. Other reasons include my love for all things audio and, oh yeah, video too. Around here it's hard to have one without the other - sort of like country and western!
My hobby began back in the 60's with my Dad's hand-me-down gear: Fisher receiver, Ampex reel-to-reel, ELAC turntable, & Kenwood speakers. Oh how glorious the sound seemed to these uneducated ears. It wasn't until my second system that I got caught in the upgrade merry-go-round. A little audio education went a long way to derailing me into the quest for audio nirvana. Climbing that slippery slope through high school connected me with music in an even deeper way, yet diminished its enjoyment at the same time. It was as if knowledge displaced enjoyment - the more I knew about music and sound, the more I thought about it while listening, which caused me to listen critically even more, which in turn resulted in sonic dissatisfaction, and finally planted me squarely in the gear-of-the-month club (little did I know at the time that acoustic treatment might have rescued me).
You can't win anything in that club except by accident, which is how I met my 2-channel mentor. I called him Captain Kirk for his wealth of theoretical and practical audio experience. He called me Lumen, for my propensity to shine as an apprentice of sorts. That was my username over on Sonnie's original site, Home Theater Shack. Anyway, I learned how to take my system from mediocre to excellent with the system setup tweaks he taught; and from excellent to stellar with the right speaker upgrade. The key to final satisfaction was "voicing" the system to reproduce the majority of my collection with high sound quality regardless of the source material. By definition, that means my system editorializes the sound and cannot, therefore, be accurate in the absolute sense. But it's a warm-side-of-neutral editorial, which is still very pleasing to these ears.
I wanted to be a rock star, but became an engineer instead. I never lost sight of my love for music, and still reserve a place in my heart for stereo and artsy, well-made gear. But life moves on and circumstances change. I lost half the square footage after my last move, so WAF decrees a single-system home. So as not to succumb to my gear's financial depreciation, I'm trying to cull the best of it into a killer AV system - yup, bringing my excess baggage on board!
So whether it's audio or video nirvana, I hope to contribute my knowledge and experience on this forum in return for what I feel will be one of the most entertaining educational opportunities on the web. The fine talent here already helped make my system shine. I'm certain they'll help improve it, too. Thanks for having me aboard!
