Dynaudio Unveils Its New "Special Forty" Anniversary Speaker

(May 18, 2017) Dynaudio has invaded the 2017 High End Show in Munich with a brand-new 40th anniversary loudspeaker in tow. The speaker, called the Special Forty ($2,999/pair), is loaded with technical improvements that make for enhanced performance and sound.

“We didn’t want to rest on our laurels with the Special Forty,” said Otto Jørgensen, Dynaudio Product Manager. “We’ve studied the techniques and technologies that brought Dynaudio so much success in the past, and brought them up to date in our new Dynaudio Labs facility. We wanted to revisit those innovations and see what we’d do differently this time – and Dynaudio’s 40th birthday was the perfect time for it.”

The company’s design team has endowed the Special Forty with an entirely new tweeter design that’s exclusive to the speaker. Dubbed the Esotar Forty, it’s built upon elements of the company’s highly regarded Esotar2 tweeter. It utilizes a precision-coated soft-dome diaphragm, a new high-grade neodymium magnet and optimized magnet system airflow, a new reflection-absorbing felt ring, and Dynaudio’s ferrorfluid-damped aluminum voice coil, to play down into upper midrange frequencies (approximately 1000Hz).

Dynaudio says the Esotar Forty has a “significantly lower resonance frequency and further minimized distortion,” as compared to previous tweeter designs, and highlights its new Airflow Basket which holds the driver motor in place without transferring unwanted vibrations into the cabinet.

(Dynaudio) The Special Forty is available in two wood grain finishes.
The speaker’s 17cm woofer design is also unique. In addition to new components such as a high-grade neodymium magnet, a fiberglass voice coil former, and a Nomex spider suspension, the woofer also taps Dynaudio’s proprietary Magnesium Silicate Polymer diaphragm material and a geometrically optimized one-piece molded cone design. The end result is a driver capable of playing from 41Hz up to 4,000Hz.

Dynaudio says its engineering team designed the Special Forty’s frequency overlap to happen in the drivers themselves, not in the speaker’s refined crossover. This avoids any correction or signal tweaking in the crossover, itself.

Externally, the Special Forty is super easy on the eyes, featuring straight edges and cut front-face corners. The speaker is available in two exclusive wood grain finishes: Grey Birch and Red Birch. Both crosscut sandwich veneers pop with truly rich wood grains that are easily seen, making for a striking visual statement.

The Special Forty will begin shipping during June 2017.

Wow, that is going to be a tough speaker to drive. Sensitivity is actually lower since they measured @ 2.83 V//1m. Just means you will need a good amp which is not a bad thing at all. Are we planning a review?

Good eyes... I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that.

Yup, going to take a fairly hefty amp to get these puppies singing loud and clear.

I've asked about potential for an AV NIRVANA review, we'll see!
