(May 22, 2017) Denon recently revealed two new 5th generation IN-Command X Series AV Receivers. Known for manufacturing affordable high-performance gear, Denon’s new receivers are primed to deliver a great AV experience when it comes to the latest audio and video technologies. Pricing lands both receivers well under the $1,000 mark, with the AVR-X2400H carrying a $799 (MSRP) price tag and the AVR-X1400H costing only $599.

Both receivers have all of the technologies needed to handle modern 4K video sources. Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) in the form of HDR10 and Dolby Vision are included out of the box, with a planned HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) update due via a future firmware update. Of course, this means the receiver also offers support for 4K/60Hz video, HDCP 2.2 copy protection, Wide Color Gamut, and 4:4:4 sub sampling, all of which are necessary to meet the demands of the best displays and sources available on the market.

The X2400H offers eight HDMI inputs (two out), all of which carry full support of the above 4K demands. The X1400H is no slouch either, offering a robust six HDMI inputs (one out).

On the audio front, both models offer both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, making 5.2.2 Atmos speaker arrangements a possibility. And fans of Audyssey’s MultEQ XT calibration software will be glad to know that both models also offer this functionality. Included with this package is an Audyssey MultEQ Editor app ($20 purchase required) that allows users to fine tune settings.

Music playback options include built-in Bluetooth and dual-antenna Wi-Fi functionality. Once connected, owners will have access to Apple AirPlay, network attached storage devices (NAS), numerous Internet streaming services (including Pandora and TIDAL), and TuneIn Internet radio. Both models also support various Hi-Res audio files, including FLAC, ALAC, and DSD (up to 5.6MHz).

Denon’s proprietary HEOS multi-room streaming technology is also available, allowing user controlled playback of music to dedicated zones of HEOS-compatible speakers. Each zone is controlled via the free HEOS app (iOS, Android, and Fire devices). Another benefit of the system is the ability to stream Bluetooth content from one speaker to another via a home’s Wi-Fi network.

For those of you looking for earth-friendly products, you’ll enjoy Denon’s advanced ECO mode that allows the receivers to adjust power consumption based on use. This feature is user controlled, but can also be set to Auto, allowing the receiver to reduce energy consumption by as much as 50-percent during low volume playback.

Speaking of power, the X2400H is capable of delivering 95 Watts per channel (8 ohms, 20Hz- 20kHz), while the X1400H possesses 80 Watts per channel performance.

Both receiver models are shipping now.

These units process a veritable alphabet-soup of codecs! Both movies and music are well served, and all for under $800. True high performance is definitely trickling down from their flagships. What would you say is the major difference between these and Denon's higher-end offerings?

Primarily amplifier and channel offerings will be the most likely case, definitely the step-up Mult EQ XT 32 version of Audyssey, and probably nicer onboard DAC.... I'd guess they also offer an additional HDMI output...we'll have to wait and see. I'd assume the top models will be 11.2 to 9.2 channel receivers (at least with processing power in that realm).

Still, for less than $800, these receivers deliver quite a bit of tech!
