Anyone using an IR receiver with there Pioneer or other brand AVR?

I just relocated my Pioneer SC-99 AVR to a spot behind a curtain, so the IR sensor on the front of the AVR is not accessible. Although I have the iControl AV5 app on my phone which controls the AVR just the same, I'd like to still use the remote when needed. My AVR has 3 IR ports in the back, one labeled OUT and the other 2 IN. the owner's manual says that an IR receiver can be used in cases like mine, instead of the sensor in the front of the unit. It mentions Niles and Xantech as possible brands.

So my question is, since the AVR has the ports in the back which accept the 3.5mm jack for IR, would I need a full kit that includes a distribution box and IR emitters which would get placed on the front of the AVR where the sensor is, or can I just use a basic IR receiver cable which has the jack on one end and the IR receiver on the other?

It just seems like buying a full kit with the additional distribution box, emitters, etc. is unnecessary if Pioneer already put the ports on the AVR itself (which I assume would work like the distribution block in a kit).

Is anyone using one of these?

I would think the IR receiver is all you need. Keep in mind that it needs to be a convenient location. If that’ not close to the Pioneer, cabling long enough will be needed.
