Very interesting question. Despite having very old ears, I have been involved with the audio world for only about 10 yrs and the 5 (?) brands that influenced my development are as follows:

Bose (hasn't been mentioned so far ...)
Def Tech
Chane
Hsu
RSL
Elac
SVS

Influencing my choices were: customer service and value. Ok, ok Bose doesn't score well on either measurement but who didn't start with Bose ?

I have never owed Bose...I have had friends who have had 901s, but they were never my cup of tea.
