Noobie hardware questions

I’ve found quite a bit of info pertaining to REW, but none of it covered basic hardware needs. Besides a mic, I know I need to get a laptop but are there any special requirements for it? IE: Screen size, processor, what HDMI version, how much storage space, etc? And, do I need a DSP?

Also, I’ll be using REW to calibrate 2 different systems. One of which will have quite a few channels depending on which processor I get. How many channels will REW handle? The other system is fairly old and uses a 8.1 receiver (Yes, 8.1. It's currently configured as a 5.1 plus 2 front effects channels and 2 subs) that doesn’t have any of the modern day conveniences like HDMI ports and USB. Will I be able to use REW for this system?

This is a difficult question to answer without knowing the specifics of the processors and sGeneral answers are:

You will need to use ASIO4All or Flexasio drivers for REW to send signals to the HDMI bed channels from a Windows box.

There are workarounds to get signals to effects height channels, processor depending.

You will need to be able to process REW filters. (DSP). How that might be done will depend on processor and signal chain.

What is the workaround? The receiver does not have HDMI or USB ports.

Also, does anyone have an answer for the laptop question?

What is the workaround? The receiver does not have HDMI or USB ports.

You could use hdmi to toslink adapter.
You could maybe use an external soundcard with toslink or coax out
You could use a laptop headphone out to rca in on the receiver
There’s probably other ways too
In some cases moving a speaker to a different channel output on the receiver is necessary in order to measure it.

Good ideas! Thanks! I would think I'd be able to get something to work.
