Definitely have to go with a pj with the remaining cash no matter what speakers we end up with.

It's going to be hard to beat the pioneer for the value of 489.00

If we went this route it leaves 385. Thanks jbrax!!

That would leave enough for a refurbished??? Pj but limited options for sure.

We also need a blu-ray. Can find them cheap thankfully.

I know the svs is a great sub but anyway to shave some $ on a deftech maybe??
379.00
https://www.crutchfield.com/p_735PS...a&awnw=g&awcr=47439201385&awdv=m&awug=9028225

That would leave 485.00

For a sub HSU also has some lesser priced options but...

The Epson will last and even though it's not naitive 1080p it will scale and is better than most in that price range. It's plenty bright as well.
A true 1080p home theatre projector prices are higher by at least another $300

Maybe we should reconsider the sub and pump a little extra into the PJ. I agree that SVS sub is probably ideal, but give a look at Dayton Audio offerings... HSU... ah... maybe Polk Refurb from their eBay store?

Well if it was me I would rather have a better display. I feel maybe we can get away with a cheaper sub but one that can still get it done. A rfurbished or Dayton might open up a little more for a 1080 pj and maybe a little more power on the avr.

It's starting to look like a pretty good set up for a small budget.

I agree...I don't think we'll sacrifice too much by going cheaper on the sub...and that difference probably will be more than forgotten by a better visual experience.

Snagging that BenQ PJ ($499) would be nice

Technically, to save some cash, couldn't we buy a $60 can of paint and find a flat wall? :-)

Are we broke yet?

So far we have:

- Denon AVR-S510BT 5.2 Receiver ($159)
- Pioneer 5-channel Speaker System ($490)
- We've pegged a display/PJ to be ($500)
- Tentative SVS PB1000 ($479)

That means we've spent $1628 and we still need a BD player... which will probably get us to $1700. If we go with a projector, we need a screen or paint. Alternatively, we could buy a Roku stick or some kind of Chromecast device.

Also, let's not forget about cables. (Probably another $50?)

Our job isn't close to being done... we need to eliminate roughly $250.

$1500 or bust!

It's hard to see cutting back on the budget and still having a decent entry level setup. You obviously aren't cutting funds with the AVR chosen. I don't see scaling back on the speakers unless you go small satellite speakers. The sub is fairly important but you could possibly go with a much less capable cheaper option. I guess we could always go with a $200 32" tv on a Black Friday sale but where's the fun in that?

Well I don't think we can get any cheaper on the pioneer speakers without sacrificing. There is room in the sub I believe. Anybody have experience in a cheaper capable sub around 250ish
