Hi All,

Well my current house is up for sale and we will be moving into a new construction home towards the end of June. We are going from 1000qsft to about 3200sqft. The new place will have a loft, great room, and "rec" room in the basement so plenty of areas to have some fun with.

I plan to put a tv and maybe some in wall/ceiling speakers in the great room area to have for just general background music. I might eventually put a stereo pair (or front 3) of some Salk with custom finish.

The loft upstairs will probably serve as our "family room" area with a tv and in wall/bookshelf type setup. Since it is next too the bedrooms probably wont go hogwild with volume and low end. Just enough to make it sound good that the kids can enjoy.

Also plan to have some patio speakers.

The basement has a rec room and 2 bedrooms. One bedroom will serve as our home office space. The rec room and adjacent bedroom my long term goal is to make it a recording studio with the control room in the bedroom and rec room as the studio. But for now, the rec room is intended to be the theater room.

The rec room is roughly 15 x 14 with 8 foot ceilings. I haven't decided on projector vs large LED yet, so I am wiring for both. Projector is obviously a great experience but might come at a later date and start with the LED. I really liked the JTR Noesis 210RT's (yes the red ones!) both for their size and output. I am an audio engineer for live concerts and events so music is a big important factor for me. While the bigger 215's would be great, I am concerned might be too much for the space. Maybe not? Anybody out there with the 215's in a space like mine? I plan on 2-4 subs depending on space and which models. Because of my live sound experience, I am actually curious if the Cap212 pro model would combine well with some of the 18's for some serious output in both lower and upper bass spectrums.

At any rate, just getting started.

My current equipment includes:
  • Samsung 46' LCD i got back in 2008.
  • Pioneer VSX-9040TXH
  • Sony BRD
  • XBox
  • Comcast
  • Apple TV
  • MSB Technologies Gold Link Dac 3
  • Paradigm Monitor 9 v2
  • Paradigm CC370 v2
  • Paradigm Mini Monitors v2
  • HSU VTF2 mk2
Thanks for reading! Any input is appreciated. Attached are a few drawings of the new place.

Looks like a great place. Size of drivers are really a matter of preference a lot of the times. I have had dual 15's in my place which is similar to your size room and loved them. I only used maybe 25% of their maximum on a wild night once. Dual 10's work for most people but I always suggest going a little bigger so you never know the limits of a speaker. Better to be at a fraction of potential then more distortion. BUT I do love the the 215RM's wider horn used with the 2way section.

So its always hard to tell another what will work for them. Going with just SPL numbers is one thing but we all have differing opinions on how we want to get there. So if you used the 215RM's they could be placed on top of sealed or ported subs cabinets for easy placement.

Mixing and matching subs can work but just requires a lot more time and DSP to make it sum well. Better to keep all the same subs if you can. BUT either way can work.

I am a DIY guy so I tend to build bigger than I actually need. BUT this tends to lend me well because I dont have to upgrade anytime soon.:hsd::hide::)

How lucky... new space that you can configure as your own! I look forward to seeing some pictures as things come together.

One comment: Since you're doing new construction, get your builder to run some conduits for the wires. Just as an example, if you run current HDMI cables now, you're going to be kicking yourself in a few years when HDMI 2.1 starts to filter into mainstream. Conduits will allow you to easily pull new cables, if and when the time comes!
